Three TCG members (Phil Ferguson, Lacey Shay, and Kirk MacGregor) went to the combined Mid-Appalachian Region / Virginia Region Fall Meeting at the Friars Hole System in West Virginia. This regional meeting was held over the weekend of 2-3 October 2010, and it was well worth the drive. Among other things, the meeting organized trips to a number of local caves. One of these was Poor Farm Cave in Pocahontas County, WV. This cave has a well-decorated section named Jackie's Grotto. The 5 photos below were taken there.

The soda straw near the middle of this photo really is as non-vertical as it looks. It is about 25 cm long, and soda straws this far off vertical are very rare. Why it grew this way is a mystery. Being "blown off vertical" by wind seems unlikely because this soda straw is in a sheltered little alcove. (Photo by Kirk MacGregor 2 October 2010)

Emily Ray looking at a line of "baby" stalagmites. If conditions were favourable, these "young'uns" could have grown in just 300 years. On the other hand, their growth could have taken much longer. (Photo by Kirk MacGregor 2 October 2010)
