Ontario Shuffleboard Association

History

It is not known exactly when Shuffleboard was introduced in Ontario, but is has been played in the Province for decades. It is generally assumed that Ontarians vacationing in the southern United States, especially Florida brought the game to Ontario.

The Ontario Shuffleboard Association was formed in 1984 and Chris Stutzmann was elected President. In 1985 Rules and Regulations were established and the first Ontario Championship Tournament was played in Scarboro. Singles and doubles tournaments have been held each year.

In 1987 the Constitution and By-laws were adopted and in 1989 the Association was incorporated. Also in 1989 the Ontario Government recognized Shuffleboard as a sport. It is believed to be the only place world wide to be recognized as such.

By 1994 the Association had more than 40 clubs and 1000 members and the president Chris Stutzmann turned the presidency over to Ken Graydon who held the post for 2 years. Sandy Myers is the current President.
Because of the difficulty in obtaining suitable venues for the tournaments the Association worked for years to develop a portable court that could be transported to anywhere in the Province, and in 1994 succeeded in developing the Roll-a-Court, which has been a tremendous help in the growth of the game in Ontario.

In 1997 The World of Shuffleboard was developed by Sandy Myers as a means to connect all Shufflers world wide, and also maintains the Ontario Pages.
