Victoria School Houses

 

Victoria school’s houses were created in 1928, and named after great mountaineers who lost their lives in their attempts to conquer Mount Everest (above)

Dr. A M Kellas (d. 1921) : Research scientist in Chemistry at a London hospital ; experienced mountaineer; climbed four Himalayan peaks above 20,000 ft. between 1910 and 1 912--the Langpo Peak (22,500 ft.), the Sentinel Peak (21,240 ft.), Pauhunri (23,1 80 ft.) and Chomiomo (22,430 ft) ; member of the first British Reconnaissance team to Mt. Everest in 1921, of which Mallory was also a member. The team made an attempt through the Chumbi Valley, where Dr. Kellas died of heart failure.

Andrew “Sandy” Irvine (1902-1924) British Mountaineer, killed on June 8, 1924 along with George Mallory, while nearing the summit of Mt. Everest during the 1924 British Expedition.

George H Leigh Mallory (1886-1924) British mountaineer; climbed extensively in the Alps in the early 1900’s; took part in the 1921 British Reconnaissance of Everest, playing a major role in exploring the North Col route; took part in both the 1922 and 1924 Everest expeditions; lost his life during the latter, along with Irvine, 27,600 ft up on the ridge of the North face, when they suddenly disappeared in the mist and remained untraced by other members who searched the entire area. Recently Mallory’s body has been found and photographed on the mountain. His body was left to rest peacefully at the request of his remaining relatives.
